About Department
1)Udal thathuvam( Physiology)
2)Uyir vediyal( Bio Chemistry)
Physiology is the basic science of life which explains the functional basis of human body. Physiology explains about the functions of each system and the inter communication for maintaining good health.Practicals are taught for understanding reasoning and application of knowledge of physiology in clinical practice.
In B.S.M.S Degree, Udal Thathuvam/Human Physiology includes Siddha Physiology (Udal Thathuvam – Paper I ) and Modern Physiology (Udal Thathuvam – Paper II )
In Siddha physiology students learn about the basic principles which connects the body, mind and soul. The physiological role of 7 udar kattugal (seven physical constituents), Uyir Thathu (three humors /Vatha, Pitha and Kapha), Pranayama m (Siddhars science of breathing), 14 vehangal (14 natural urges) , Five sheaths ( Five kosam) and Naadi (pulse reading) are taught in Siddha aspect. Role of five elements from birth to death are emphasized in Siddha physiology.
In Modern physiology the students are elaborately taught as per the syllabus and recent findings. Proper understanding of the subject is emphasized as learning the principles of physiology is vital for the upcoming studies in clinical practice
In order to practically train the students about the basics of body functions, the Physiology Department laboratory is well built and fully equipped with the required equipments and instruments and through the routine practicals the students are taught with trained faculties and staff. The department is supported with departmental library.
Practicals are taught for understanding, reasoning and application of knowledge of physiology in clinical practice especially in Siddha unique system of diagnosis which deals with urine analysis (Neerkuri and Neikuri) based on colour and consistency, Naadi thervu (pulse reading), Deha ilakkanam (temperament of an individual)etc which comes under envagai thervu (eight tools of diagnosis) Practical training is given both in siddha and modern aspects
Biochemistry, called biological chemistry, is the study of chemical processes within cells.
Focuses on understanding how biological molecules give rise to the processes that occur
within living cells like the flow of chemical energy through metabolism, biochemical
processes that give rise to the complexity of life. Also deals with new emerging techniques
and methodologies to study Biomarkers for differential diagnosis, prognosis etc related to
human health and diseases and interpretation of clinical tests in support of diagnosis and
treatment.
The biochemistry syllabus is as per the direction given by the National Commission for
Indian Systems of Medicine and Kerala University of Health Sciences.
The department has a full-fledged laboratory for doing undergraduate practicals.
