Fundamental principles of siddha medicine
According to Siddha science, the universe consists of five elements. They are the basis of the world and human being. All created or evolved matter in the world, be it animal, vegetable, or minerals are fall under these categories They are the fundamental principles of creation, preservation and destruction in the Universe. All things are made up of these five elements when they destroyed they again dispersed into five elements.
Man is said to be the Microcosm and world the Macrocosm; because what exists in the world is also exists in man. So man must be looked upon as an integral part of universal nature. Further the forces in the Microcosm or man are identical with the forces of the Macrocosm or the world.
The fundamental principles starts with 96 principles which is the functional anatomy and physiology of the body and soul.it consists of physical component, psychological and intellectual components of the human being.
The basic cause for occurrence of diseases in our body is imbalance of three humours i.e vatham ,pitham, kapham which influences on seven physical constituents.other than body and mind , quality of soul and back ground of karma are also the causes of diseases in human beings.
Philosophy
The highest goal of life is Spiritual perfection or to become one with the Supreme. Siddhars found that diseases of body are the obstacles in this attempt. They have contemplated about the elevation of body and mind. Healthy life needs both thathuva gnanam and vingnanam.therefore the human being is in need of a spiritual guru who removes his spiritual darknessand and this procedure is known as deekai.Through deekai only one can get the knowledge about pathi, pasu, pasam and the role and importance of GURU in a life of a human being.
To develop peace among mankind – yoga, to develop civilized mankind – philosophies, to touch the greatest depth of science- Alchemy, to live long – Kayakalpam, to predict – Astrology, to achieve – spirituality.
All these facts are essential for a healthy civilization and these facts must be thoroughly analized with a view to emunciate the scientific principles.
Inorder to break the birth cycle, this system directs us with the help of its philosophies and yoga towards spirituality which paves the way to peace. The obstacles on this way could be overcome with medicines, thus we can attain the ultimate spiritual end.
History of siddhars
Any system of medicine is only an evaluation not an overnight invention. So also the traditional Siddha system of medicine evolved with the development of mankind.
Siddha medicine is named after the word “Siddhi”. Siddhi is a Tamil word means attainment of perfection or to become one with supreme. This is the highest goal of life. “Siddhar” is also a Tamil word, derived from a root word “SID” which means WISE which denotes, they are having the true knowledge about the soul. Siddhars are considered to be super human beings. They were men of highly cultured, intellectual and spiritual faculties combined with the supernatural powers.
They were the ancient scientists.
They were popular writers in Tamil in all its branches of knowledge
The Dravidians are the proud inheritors of their knowledge and wisdom. Every prominent temple in Tamilnadu is attributed to those great siddhars. . Not only medicine but also their contributions are in the field of literature, Philosophy, Astrology, Alchemy, Yoga etc.
They are divinely persons with supernatural powers. Followers of Shiva cult. They were strived for spiritual well being. Siddhars were experts in alchemy, yoga and the science of elixir. Popular thinkers in Tamil in all of its branches of knowledge-including medicine
Spirituality helps them to acquire knowledge. Regular practice of yoga will help to arouse serpent power. It is remained dormant normally in the base of the spinal cord (Moolatharam). It is the source of knowledge. This power can connect a man with God. One can derive knowledge from a Guru or God only.
Siddha system comprises art, philosophy and science. With the help of these three branches, siddha system drives us towards attainment of perfection.
AIM OF SIDDHARS AND IMPORTANCE OF BODY
The main aim of siddhars is to attain immortality. They were well aware that the physical body is the only instrument by which a person can reach the ultimate goal of life that means to become one with the Lord. The great Siddhar Thirumoolar says that,
“ Destruction of body leads to destruction of soul
Attainment of salvation becomes impossible
Learning the process of body care
Preserved my body and thereby my soul” (Translation from Thirumanthiram)
Siddhars realised that if the body could only be made strong and perfect they could get rid of birth and death and live for ages together. They were further realized that if the body came to an end it would take a longer time to reach the highest goal, by being born again and again. As Siddhi means perfection, Siddhars aimed at perfection of health. So they invented medicines, yoga, pranayama and kayakalpa for longevity of life.
Man is the only being in the creation with all kinds of latent powers reaching up to the level of God, and his only defect is that he does not care to know that such powers are hidden within him self. Constant practice of yoga, pranayama etc., helps one to raise that powers within himself
