The vibrant Pongal Festival, a cherished celebration of Tamil culture, was held on a grand scale at the Santhigiri Fest, bringing together the rich traditions of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in a spirit of unity and cultural appreciation. Organized by over a hundred students from Tamil Nadu and Kerala under the auspices of the Santhigiri Siddha Medical College, the event conveyed a profound message of harmony and the enduring connection between humanity and nature.
The celebrations began with the ceremonial lighting of the Pongala fire by Gurukkal Dr. S. Mahesh, founder of the Agasthyam Foundation. During his address, Dr. Mahesh reflected on the historical unity of South India under the name Tamilakam before linguistic differences divided the region into separate states. He emphasized the deep connection between Tamil festivals, nature, and Siddha medicine, a treasure trove of traditional knowledge and a unique contribution by South India.
The event was presided over by Dr. P. Hariharan, Principal-in-charge of the Siddha Medical College, and attended by distinguished guests, including Swami Manuchith, Janani Pooja, and Janani Kripa. Faculty members Dr. J. Ninapriya, Dr. G. Mohanambigai, Dr. K. Namashivayam, Sheej N., Ranjitha V., and Beatrice A., along with Assistant General Manager Vijayan S., Convener Mahesh M., and student representatives Navneeth M., Yogesh M., and Muthupriyadarshini S., also graced the occasion with their presence and shared insightful words.
The festival featured a series of engaging traditional activities such as a Pongal dish preparation competition, Uriyadi (pot-breaking game), and Vadamvali (tug of war), led by students from various batches. Held authentically and traditionally, the celebration offered a unique and enriching experience for visitors to the Fest City.
