Siddha system of medicine has three unique fields which are said to be the three basic and vital pillars on which the entire Siddha system is built on. They are Vaadham (Chemistry and Alchemy), Vaithyam (Medicine and Treatment) and Gnaanam (Yoga and Wisdom).

Muppu and Guru marundhu (substances act like a catalyst, transmutative agent, stem cell, immunomodulator, rejuvenator etc) are the keystones to fulfil aforesaid three fundamentals. These substances are considered as the crown of Siddhars since they have not been revealed or told in any other ancient medical sciences.

Siddhars were the spiritual adepts possessing \u2018ashta siddhi\u2019 (the eight supernatural powers). They have attained these eight supernatural powers through \u2018ashta yoga\u2019 practice.

One cannot accomplish the Ashta yoga practice unless he possesses the following three instruments viz., the primary instrument i.e. Rasa kuligai (consolidated mercury with magical power), the secondary instrument i.e. Nava mani (nine flawless precious gems) and the tertiary instrument i.e. Kaaya karpa medicines (rejuvenating elixir which gives mental and physical stamina and immortality).

Without the knowledge of Gunapadam, it is impossible to prepare or utilize the aforesaid three instruments and hence this knowledge is considered as the basic and vital one.

Gunapaadam means the study of medicinal, spiritual and magical properties of metals, minerals, ores, flora and fauna. It is the vastest subject in Siddha medical science and is being taught to the students by two Gunapaadam departments.

1. Department of Gunapadam Marunthiyal (Siddha Pharmacology)

2. Department of Gunapaadam Marunthaakaviyal (Siddha Pharmaceuticals)

Siddha physicians are said to be having three eyes alike Lord Shiva and those three eyes are \u2018suddhi\u2019 (purification), \u2018gunam\u2019 (properties), \u2018nikandu\u2019 (bibliography including the synonyms and availability) of raw drugs and prepared drugs. These three have been taught to students in the Department of Gunapaadam Marunthiyal i.e. Siddha Pharmacology Department.

Department of Gunapaadam Marunthakaviyal i.e. Siddha Pharmaceuticals Department, teaches about various forms of medicines and their preparations, drug and diet regimens, posology, storage, dispensation, standardization, legal acts, mass scale production. It also edifies the students on identification, adulteration, geochemical and zoological description of raw drugs along with the basics of medical geochemistry.

As the unique doctrine of Siddha system is \u201cunave marunthu; marunthae unavu\u201d (food is medicine, medicine is food), this Siddha pharmaceutical department does the major role in guiding the medicos on how to prepare, intake, store and share the foods and medicines qualitatively and quantitatively along with the legal and economical aspects.

Drugs play an important role in our world, not only as effective substances for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease, but also to improve the quality of life by enabling people to live with a disease as appropriate for their social and cultural background.

Though, Siddha medicinal system is very ancient and dated to the times of 3rd millennium BCE Indus Valley Civilization or earlier, it has Nano based drug delivery systems in the management of human diseases which are an efficient therapeutic cure at tiny dosages for the nowadays emerging need.
