Of India) approved and GREEN LEAF Certified (Govt.of Kerala) Siddha hospital which was established in 2nd December 1986, as first hospital of Santhigiri Ashram, by Navajyothi sree Karunakara Guru, the founder Guru of the Ashram . Later this hospital was upgraded as teaching College Hospital in the Year 2002. This hospital is now functioning for the fulfillment of the great vision of NAVAAROGYA DHARMA SIDDHANTHAM and for the propagation of Siddha System of medicine. Siddha Medicines

Siddha consider food as medicine  Siddha is a nourishment treatment through seasonal regiments. The drugs used by the Siddhars are classified into three groups. thavaram (herbal product), thathu (inorganic substances) and Jangamam (animal products).  The thathu drugs are further classified as uppu (water soluble inorganic substances or drugs that give out vapour when put into fire), pashanam ( drugs not dissolved in water but emit vapour when fired), uparasam (similar to pashanam but differ in action), loham (not dissolved in water but melt when fired), rasam (drugs which soft) and ghandhagam (drugs which are insoluble in water, like sulphor).


In herbal drugs, Siddhars use herbs, which grow in the surrounding areas, and even herbs that grow in high altitudes of Himalayas. It is noteworthy that Siddhar Korakkar was the first to introduce Cannabis as a medicine: he used it as a powerful painkiller. They also used animal products as medicine, for example in mental diseases, peranda bhasma is used which is made of human skull bones and the skulls of dogs.
Drugs used in Siddha medicine were classified on the basis of five properties. suvai (taste), guna (character), veerya (potency), pirivu (class) and mahimai (action). Most of the classical medicines and proprietary drugs are manufactured in our health zone complex in the same campus under the name viz., Santhigiri Ayurveda & Siddha Vaidyasala. It is a GMP certified factory and licensed to produce 700 around medicines. The unit contains a Raw material store and extended with the sale of of raw drugs under its ‘Angadi’. The finished goods are sold by the marketing department having 600 plus dealers all around Kerala.   • Siddha medicine is one of the oldest medical systems in the world which is believed to be originated in between 10000 BC and 7000 BC. It was flourished during first Tamil Sangam period (6th and 7th century BC). The earliest references about Siddha are seen in the Sangam literature such as Tholkappiyam and Thirumanthiram. Siddha system of medicine dominated the Dravidian civilization of the southern peninsula of India and submerged Lemuria continent. Siddha literatures are available only in Tamil language. Siddha, is blended with Dravidian culture.

Siddha advocates four kinds of knowledge: They are Vaidhyam (diagnosis and treatment), Vatham (Preparation of medicines & alchemy), Yogam (ashtangayogam – purification and regulation of body and mind, ensuring longevity and attainment of heavenly bliss) and Gnanam (Attainment of complete knowledge). Siddha is not only a mere medical science but also a perfect way of life

Siddha is strongly anchored on “96 thathwas”, the fundamental principles of Siddha system, which encompassing all physical, physiological and psychological components.

: As per Siddha, all living things, non living things, the universe, human body, medicines, food, three humours etc are made up of five primordial elements (earth, water, fire, air, and space). The human body consists of five primordial elements, three humours (vali, azhal, ayyam) and seven physical constituents (saram, senneer, oon, kozhuppu, enbu, moolai, sukkilam/sronitham). Diagnosis, selection of drug, treatment, and Pathyam in Siddha are based on the same five element concept

  • 32 varieties of internal medicines (which include single herbal, poly herbal, herbo mineral, mineral, metallic drugs) and 32 varieties of external medicines are available in Siddha. Thousands of formulations are told by Siddhars under each class. Siddha is the only traditional medical system processing this much classification.
  • Totally 4448 diseases of mankind have been described in Siddha literatures. Siddhars were documented well designed treatment protocol and drug/ diet regimen for each disease in their manuscripts/ literatures in different period of time in the history.

When the normal equilibrium of three humors (vatha, pitha and kapha) is disturbed, disease is caused. The factors which affect this equilibrium are genetic, environment, climatic conditions, diet, physical activities and stress. Under normal conditions, the ratio between these three humors (vatha, pitha and kapha) is 1:1/2:1/4, respectively. According to the Siddha medicine system diet and life style play (unavaathi seyal) a major role not only in health but also in curing diseases

Envagai thervu- is the eight fold diagnostic method followed in Siddha to confirm the diagnosis, assess curable – incurable nature and assess the prognosis. Among 8 different tools, prime importance is given to Naadi parisodhanai (pulse reading) and Neerkkuri – nirakkuri and neikkuri (urine examination). Manikkadai nool is another non invasive diagnostic tool followed to assess diagnosis and prognosis in routine practice.

  • Thokkanam (massage procedures) 2. Varmam (manipulation of affected varma points in the human body with elakkal and adangal methods to get rid of traumatic and neuro-musculo-skeletal lesions 3. Yogam, Pranayamam and Dhyanam (It is meant for regulating body and mind, promoting concentrating power and attaining complete knowledge/ heavenly bliss. Practising yoga and dhyanam will be beneficial to overcome all sort of psychological disturbances) 4. Kayakarpam (108 kayakalpa methods are told by Siddhars to ensure longevity and maintain youth.

Herbal Garden at Santhigiri Siddha Medical College Hospital

Santhigiri operates scientifically managed herbal gardens extending to more than 50 acres within the Ashram premises, and at Palakkad. In these gardens thrive some of the rarest species of herbs. Medicinal trees, creepers, bushes, small plants, grass etc. are being grown here in a natural habitat. Organized cultivation of herbal plants and development of nursery for distribution of saplings is being done. The Ashram has also procured 50 acres of land in Madhurai, Thamilnadu for developing herbal gardens. Aunique combination of traditional plant experts  and qualified botanists work on this project and extensive scientific documentation is being done.

By the will of the Brahmam, to NAVAJYOTHI SREEKARUNAKARAGURU was revealed the total reality of human existence. Guru was born in modest circumstances at Chandiroor, Cherthala 90 years ago. After relentless spiritual endeavor Guru completed the mission of establishing the Yuga Dharma of our age as to be practiced and fulfilled through the auspices of Santhigiri Ashram.

Santhigiri Ashram is situated in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, with branch Ashrams in Cherthala (Janmagriham), Haripad, Kottarakkara, Thrissur, Kozhikode, Kannur, Sultanbathery, Palghat, Kallar, Kumily, Cochin, Kottayam- all in Kerala, Chennai(Cheyyur),Madurai, Kanyakumari, Bangalore and in Delhi. Today, lakhs of Guru’s devotees regardless of caste, creed, colour and culture have accepted the Karma and Dharma revealed as appropriate for our yuga by Guru.

Annadanam Serving food to all

Guru gave prime importance to Annadanam. Whenever someone visited the Ashram, Guru used to ask them first to have food and then talk to him. The hunger and well being of the body have to be addressed first as the body is the instrument for the functioning of the soul.Thus, thousands of visitors to the Ashram and to any of its 22 branches are served food three times a day.

‘Annadanam’ is considered to be a ‘Mahadanam’ or the best offering that one can make to earn merit for oneself. Annadanam is considered the pinnacle of all penance ever giving food for the needy will skyrocket one’s deed score to a whole new level. The Prasadham (food) is served by volunteer devotees in an atmosphere of prayer for the Universal peace and Welfare where each visitor is served as though being served to “God”.

Guru always mentioned that in ones life there are many “dharmas” of each the most prominent is Dana Dharma and again in that most eminent is the “ Annadanam”. The devotees always do this Annadanam in every occasion associated in ones life(like Birthdays, Anniversaries, Remembrance etc.)
