Anti-Tobacco Awareness Programme Conducted at SSMC
Santhigiri Siddha Medical College (SSMC), under the aegis of the Student Support & Guidance Programme (SSGP), successfully organized an Anti-Tobacco Awareness Programme at the college OPD.
The programme began with a prayer, followed by a welcome address by Ms. Akhila M. S., House Surgeon Representative. The event was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. J. Ninapriya, Head of the Department of Gunapadam Marunthiyal (Pharmacology). In her inaugural address, she highlighted the harmful effects of tobacco use, explained Siddha-based external treatment approaches, and emphasized the role of individuals as anti-tobacco ambassadors in society. She also declared the college campus and OPD as a Tobacco Cessation Centre.
An awareness session was conducted at 10:15 AM at the OPD, led by Dr. Kalaiselvi Balakrishnan, Assistant Professor, Department of Maruthuvam (General Medicine). The session focused on the harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine, its association with serious diseases such as oral and lung cancer, and the importance of avoiding substance abuse.
As part of the programme, all participants took a special anti-tobacco oath, reinforcing their commitment to a tobacco-free lifestyle.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ms. Nandana Krishna S., House Surgeon and Student Union Representative.
The event witnessed the active participation of faculty members, medical officers, administrative staff, and students, including House Surgeons and final-year students.
